Math Colloquium – Spring 2011

During the class sessions of this class, students will be spending time learning about research mathematics. As part of this goal, you will be responsible to researching and presenting one topic related to research mathematics. As this is a new class, the format of these presentations is not set in stone; here is an approximation of what you might expect.

  • Presentations will last fifteen to twenty minutes.
  • Presentations can either be done on the whiteboard or using the computer projector.
  • Along with the presentation, you will hand out a one-page type-written summary of your presentation.

Presentation topics may include

  • A mathematical research article which you find interesting.
  • A research problem you've thought about.
  • A topic which has to do with the philosophy of mathematics.

If at any time you are unsure of what is expected in the presentation, feel free to discuss this with your instructor.  Instructors from past favorite math classes are also a valuable resource in finding an exciting topic.
